BE, °1980 – Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.

Janne Zeghers combines painting with photography. Her digital photo-paintings often originate from analog photographs, which are digitized through scanning. Textures—whether already present in the image or generated through the use of the medium—and the act of making itself are key elements in J.Z.’s work. Mistakes that occur during the process are not always corrected. Dust particles from the scanner are visible in the final image. When scanning a series of negatives automatically, the orientation of an image may be altered. All of these chance occurrences are embraced as part of the work. At times, errors are even deliberately introduced into the image.

On top of these scanned images—often depicting rather mundane subjects such as plants, architectural details, interiors, or cityscapes—J.Z. applies a digital layer of painting. The added abstract forms partially cover the original image, pushing the subject matter into the background and allowing the medium itself to take center stage.
